The Garden

In 1990, I inherited a curmudgeonly matron.  She was unkept and unruly, disheveled and untidy, unwanted and forgettable.  But to me, the garden was irresistable!  That September, I literally began at the front edge focusing on one plant at a time, pulling and discarding weeds, keeping long-suffering but truly valuable plants, and flattening the area to a blank canvas.  I would work every weekend on the project until it was too cold to work any more.  The following Spring, my little rototiller in hand, I began the reconstruction of the garden and what is now a sixteen year long love affair with a little plot of green space in the center of Madison.

My garden sits quietly near the intersection of three very busy streets.  It is a triangular, sunken plot of ground, sided by a long garage wall, a street, and a sidewalk.  If you don't look closely, you will not see it there.

It has four primary elements:  the mixed perennial border, the center circle, the three-tiered rocky area, and a shade bed.  It has a foundation planting of roses, perennials, and bulbs; and it is changed every year with the addition of new perennials from nurseries across the country and annuals bought locally.
